Every big Diablo 4 launch starts the same way: loads of hype, a plan for a fresh build, then five minutes later you're staring at a stuffed stash and wondering why you kept all that junk. With Lord of Hatred landing on April 28, 2026, now's the time to get your house in order, especially if you've been hoarding Diablo 4 Items like every drop might matter someday. It won't. Once the new expansion opens up the Skovos Isles, nobody's gonna want to spend their first night sorting tabs, selling trash, and scrambling for gold. If you want to enjoy the new zone, the darker Mephisto story beats, and whatever class you're rolling first, prep work matters more than people like to admit.
Finish what Season of Slaughter still offersFirst things first, clear out anything tied to Abattoir of Zir. If you've been putting it off, fair enough, but the window's closing. Patch 2.6.1 made the mode less irritating than it was at launch, so it's actually a decent time to finish those runs. The Blood-Soaked title and the weapon cosmetics are the sort of rewards people ignore now and then suddenly regret later. That always happens with limited stuff. The moment it's gone, it starts to feel valuable. So if you're close, push through and grab it while it still counts.
Make room before the new loot starts pouring inAfter that, deal with your stash properly. Not “I'll sort it tomorrow” properly. Actually do it. The expansion is adding the Talisman rune setup and bringing Set Bonuses back, which means your inventory pressure is about to get worse, not better. A lot of players hang onto old Aspects because they think maybe one day they'll need them. Most of the time, they won't. If an item has been sitting there untouched for months, scrap it. Be harsh. You'll want at least a few empty tabs before launch. Otherwise, every dungeon run in Skovos turns into another trip back to town, and that gets old fast.
Build up gold, materials, and account powerThen there's the boring part, which is also the bit that saves you later: gold, crafting mats, and unfinished account progress. Masterworking already eats through resources, and the Horadric Cube recipes are expected to do the same. So farm now while things are familiar. The same goes for Renown and Altars of Lilith. If you're missing stats or Paragon points, just knock them out. You really don't want to be the player doubling back through old regions while everyone else is testing builds and racing through the new campaign. It feels awful, and it puts you behind for no good reason.
Save a small boost for day oneOne smart trick before the reset: stop handing in your last Grim Favors during the final day and hold those Tree of Whispers caches until the expansion is live. Open them once you've reached the right level range and the payoff is usually much better than cashing out early. It's not some magic exploit, just a clean little head start when every upgrade matters. Day one always feels messy, and that's exactly why planning ahead helps. A lean stash, some saved resources, and enough foresight to buy Diablo 4 materials if you're short can make the first stretch of Lord of Hatred feel smooth instead of chaotic.
